ICDL Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a copy of the ECDL/ICDL Syllabus? 2007-04-24
A copy of the ECDL/ICDL Syllabus is available for downloading from the Products (relevant to each Product) section of this website. Please note that the ECDL Foundation holds the copyright and that the syllabus is for the use of candidates for the ECDL/ICDL only.
When can I start the ECDL/ICDL? 2007-04-11
You can start the ECDL or ICDL at any time by contacting any of the accredited ICDL Test Centres near you and purchasing a Skills Log Book. You should check the ECDL/ICDL Syllabus before hand to familiarise yourself with the seven modules upon which you will be tested. You are encouraged to undertake training at an ICDL Centre on any or all the modules if needed. Once you are ready, you may take a test for any of the modules in any order you choose. You have up to three years from the start of the first test, to obtain the qualification. School learners have three years or to the end of their school careers - whichever is longer.
What is the Skills Log Book? 2007-04-10
When a candidate registers to start the certification process, he/she receives a Skills Log Book on which the progress through the seven tests is recorded. As each module is passed, the accredited ICDL centre will endorse the Skills Log Book indicating the passing of that module. When all modules have been successfully completed, the Skills Log Book is forwarded to the ICDL for verification and an ICDL certificate issued.
What is the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL)? 2007-04-10
ECDL is the name given to the ICDL programme in countries outside of Europe.  The ICDL is an End-User Computer qualification.  Once the candidate has completed either 4 or 7 of the computer education modules a Start or Full Certificate will be issued.
What happens when all modules are passed? 2007-04-10
When a candidate has passed all the tests as recorded in the Skills Log Book, he/she can exchange the Skills Log Book for the ECDL or ICDL Certificate, which is issued by the ICDL, as a proof of having reached the necessary standard of IT skills knowledge and competence.
How much do tests cost? 2007-04-10
Automated testing is chargeable on a per test basis and will depend on certain issues pertaining to your centre. The cost of the automated tests are set by the providers of the test software. You have a choice between a number of independant providers. Should you decide to use an ICDL examiner, the recommended cost will be R85,00 per candidate per test (minimum of 5 candidtes to be tested at one session), plus travel and accommodation if applicable.
What is required to become an accredited Test Centre? 2007-04-10
ICDL Test Centres are required to provide an environment and qualified staff which meets the requirements of the ECDL/ICDL programme.
How do we go about becoming an accredited centre? 2007-04-09

Either contact the ICDL directly or download the relevant documentation from the following site:  /pagescentre.php?id=11

What is involved with the process? 2007-04-09
Once you have completed your accreditation forms, send the forms with all the accompanying documentation to the ICDL.  Once all documentation has been received and all is in order, your Centre will be Invoiced for the Annual Registration.  Once payment has been received, a Quality Assurance Officer will visit your centre for the Site Visit.  Should all be in order, the ICDL will then register your centre.
